Lamu – Kenya

Lamu is the main island of the archipelago which also includes the islands of Pate, Manda and other smaller ones on the Kenyan coast.

It is one of the oldest towns on the East African coast, still with its Arab style of buildings, separated by very narrow traffic free streets, which permit only pedestrians, and where bicycles and cars are unknown. Transport is by dhow or donkeys! Its old houses and many mosques, makes it unique architecturally and is certainly one of the most attractive places in the whole of Kenya, and some would maintain the whole of Black Africa.

Because of its small scale, Lamu does not lie on the mass-tourism circuit, and is much more a place for individuals or people on a day trip.

Escape with us to this nature’s paradise for two nights (3 days), full board by air on scheduled Air Kenya fights from Nairobi and Mombasa. All transfers both in Nairobi /Mombasa (hotels) and Lamu (by boat) included. Your hotel overlooks Manda Island and from the verandah one is able to step on to the beach which stretches for 17 km and with no other sign of habitation to disturb a carefree swim or walk. All rooms have their own verandas facing the sea, complete with the modern conveniences. The cuisine specialty is naturally fresh seafood prepared by local Kenyan chefs.

Deep-sea fishing is excellent in these waters and deep sea fishing boats and Arab dhows are available for hire. In Lamu, informality is the dress of the day; all one needs are swimsuits, light dresses for the ladies and short or long trousers with shirts for the men.

Overview

Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, retaining its traditional functions. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town is characterized by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas, and elaborately carved wooden doors. Lamu has maintained its social and cultural integrity, as well as retaining its authentic building fabric up to the present day. Lamu is well worth visiting for a more tranquil and away-from-the-crowds Kenya beach holiday, especially when compared to the busier and more developed central and southern parts of the coast.
