Tanzania is the country of the great lakes. It is bounded by Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Nyasa. Crowning the territory in the north is Lake Victoria, the source of the Great Nile. In the west is Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world, while in the south is Lake Nyasa. The lakes are notable for the rich bird life and abundant fish stock. There is thus great potential for big game fishing and aqua sports. On the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika are the newly established Gombe and Mahale National Parks. They are renowned for their rich wildlife which includes rain forest animals, savanna animals and troupes of chimpanzees. Steamers provided services to the lake.
