The island of Zanzibar is in the Indian Ocean, 50 km off the Eastern coast of Africa, a few degrees South of the Equator. The island of Zanzibar is an extraordinarily beautiful place from the naturalistic point of view and was, for centuries, a crossroads for international trade between Eastern Africa, the Indian Ocean, China and Europe. This has turned the island into a place where different cultures cohabit harmoniously. The language spoken here is Kiswahili, which is a common language in East Africa. However, there are people who understand English. It is a beautiful Island to visit and unwind.
Few names evoke such romantic connotations as the “Spice Island” of Zanzibar, a slumbering paradise where green cloves, bread leaf, rice and coconuts grow. Zanzibar which includes the sister island of Pemba is a tourist’s paradise. The stone town of Zanzibar is a fascinating warren of narrow streets, overhanging balconies and huge intricately carved doors. The bustling bazaar (Suk) where traders frantically bargain, is full of the pungent perfume of exotic spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and pili pili.
Why Visit Zanzibar?
Outside the town are many places of interest to visit including the Maruhubi Palace – formerly the Sultan’s harem, the Kidichi Baths, Mangapwani Village, the former site of the notorious slave pits and Kizimkazi with its recently renovated 12th century Persian Mosque. Access to Zanzibar is by air from Nairobi and Mombasa or by a five-hour boat cruise or a 20 minute flight from Dar-es-Salaam.
Beach packages can be organized at Uroa Bay, Emersons House, Dhow Palace, etc on an idyllic piece of the Zanzibari coast. Guided tours of Zanzibar town, flights from Nairobi/ Mombasa or boat transfer from Dar-es-Salaam may be arranged on request.
